Advanced Skills Action Plan

We have been working with the research, science and technology (RS&T) sector to identify

  • the critical components that need to be present in the workforce if we are to continue to improve our RS&T performance;
  • how these are supported at present; and
  • what areas would benefit most from additional or different support.

We have designed an ‘advanced skills’ framework to capture these findings. This includes key issues relating to:

  • people, such as quantity and diversity;
  • skills, such as leadership and creativity; and
  • activities, such as mobility issues.

Consultation document

The Advanced Skills Action Plan discussion document includes eleven options to provide additional or different support for the development of advanced skills.

Supporting information

An evaluation of support for people in research, science and technology (report commissioned by MoRST published November 2007)

Mapping support for people in research, science and technology (report published by MoRST in November 2007)

Feedback sought

We are seeking feedback from sector stakeholders and government agencies on which of the options are likely to be the most effective and how they might best be implemented.

We will use this feedback to develop an Advanced Skills Action Plan for RS&T. This action plan will identify practical actions for government and the sector to support our ability to attract, develop and retain top-performing people.

The implementation of this action plan will support the objectives of the Skill New Zealand Strategy, a tripartite initiative with union and business involvement, coordinated by the Department of Labour.

How to participate
