CRI statements of core purpose

In February 2010 the CRI Taskforce report presented a suite of recommendations on how the Government can get greater economic impact and benefit from its investment in CRIs.

Recommendation 2 of the Taskforce report called for government to provide a ‘clear, explicit and enduring strategic role’ for each CRI in a statement of core purpose (SCP).  The Taskforce recommended that the SCPs should be developed through high-level dialogue with CRIs and their stakeholder communities and in accordance with the Government’s priorities for the RS&T system. SCPs will inform the development of each CRIs' statement of corporate intent.

The Taskforce also noted that the SCPs should clarify what each CRI is responsible for, avoiding duplication and boundary issues between CRIs and noting areas where there is particular need for collaboration to occur to progress national goals, such as the science supporting biosecurity management.

The SCPs outline each CRI’s:

  • purpose
  • outcomes
  • scope of operation, and
  • operating principles.

Cabinet agreed to endorse the SCPs on 26 October 2010.  Copies of each CRI’s SCP can be found below.
