Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network (KAREN)
The Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network (KAREN) is an ultra high speed optical fibre internet connecting New Zealand’s research and education sector. It is managed by Crown-owned company REANNZ (Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand Ltd). KAREN links researchers in New Zealand with collaborators nationally and internationally. This allows researchers to send and receive large quantities of data very quickly, making tools like high definition video conferencing and remote access to large databases extremely efficient. It transfers data at 10 Gigabits per second which is approximately 10,000 times faster than standard broadband.
Eligible organisations
KAREN is available to New Zealand’s universities, Crown Research Institutes and New Zealand’s wider research community. Under the terms of use policy, companies working with members in research and education can connect to KAREN as partners. These classes of organisation are eligible to access KAREN:
- Members: Crown Research Institutes, universities and the National Library
- Associate Members: organisations who solely or principally providing education or research services
- Partners: organisations supporting Members and Associate Members or engaging in research and education with them
For full details please refer to the Network Access Policy on the KAREN website [207KB, PDF]. Anyone interested in a KAREN membership should contact REANNZ at info@reannz.co.nz.
Capability Build Funding
To kick start KAREN’s usage in the research community, REANNZ is managing the KAREN Capability Build Fund. This fund provides financial support for research projects that will contribute to developing collaboration capability via KAREN.
