The Navigator Network

This Network operated from 2005 - 2007 to identify emerging science trends and innovations, particularly in biotechnology and nanotechnology, and to explore related economic, social or environmental opportunities or risks for New Zealand.

The Navigator Network was established and piloted by Barbara Nicholas and Karen Cronin for the Ministry of Research Science and Technology (MoRST). MoRST took over scanning activity in 2007 under the related futurewatch programme.

The Network brought together individuals and organisations with insights into the dynamics of emerging science and technology innovation and social change, both globally and in New Zealand. Around twelve individuals from science organisations were recruited as core scanners, and were teamed with staff from relevant government agencies, and a wider network of interested members.

Findings from the Network (see links below) provided opportunities for proactive thinking about possible implications of developments for New Zealand. Reports from the Navigator Network informed government policy development, business plans and research directions.
